About The Hill Of Crosses
The Hill of Crosses is a sacred place in northern Lithuania. Over the generations, the place has come to signify the peaceful endurance of Lithuanian Catholicism despite many attempts to destroy it. Thousands of metal, stone and wooden crosses are placed here for nearly two centuries. From the olden days, a cross despite being an expression of grief and death is also a symbol of Faith, Love and Sacrifice.
In 1993, Pope John Paul II was visiting The Hill of Crosses and blessed all people of Lithuania and all of Christian World: “Thank you, Lithuanians, for this Hill of Crosses which testifies to the nations of Europe and to the whole world the faith of the people of this land”, he said.
Each visitor tries to leave a cross or a rosary at this unusual pilgrimage site, which endures as a powerful testament to devotion.
